My fix being reinstalling unity-greeter. It installs a whole lot of
stuff, one of which surely fixed my low resolution issue. For some
reason I can't list the other greeters in lightdm.conf as doing so gives
a low resolution message. So I'm stuck with unity-greeter, but at least

Introduce NVIDIA 313 flavour
The good news is that interactive scrollbars with a thumb (== overlay
scrollbars as we know them on the desktop) are implemented in the UI
toolkit. However they are not configured to behave like that. To
configure them in that manner a couple of theme properties need to be
changed in themes/Ambianc
Some recent bug reports seem to indicate that compiz is crashing when
using nVidia hardware. Not sure if this is due to the nVidia drivers or
a recent update to compiz. The bug reported in bug #1168151 indicated
they also tried the nouveau driver, so it may not be the nVidia driver.

This package use a set of scripts to check how much CPU cores you have to set
the number of virtual swaps accordingly.
The problem is, the scripts are checking for a text string ("Processor") and
this string is usually here one time only.
