I no longer have that computer. I believe it had something to do with the
bios of that specific motherboard. I've put Ubuntu on dozens of computers
and that was the only one I had problems with.

Triaging as high as this can result in very broken systems if a new
kernel is installed at the same time as no video driver will get built
due to the package install failure. Also it seems to affect MANY users.

@Sebastien Bacher: please, could you drive developers attention on this
bug? I feel that it should be assigned and risen to Critical status;
it's a core regression which will probably bite a lot of unaware and
non-technical user.
We have a report of data loss too...; and I would not be surprised
