1) Downloaded the latest development release it worked fine--no black bar 2) Rebooted into 13.10 and after the usual daily software updates the problem has gone away. Clock and calendar disappeared briefly, but that's a different bug I got it fixed. Anyway all clear now. Thanks for your help.
