I have the same problem in Ubuntu 12.10 with gnome. I am not running
apache, it is a pure desktop system.
Even though I cannot start applications from the menus, I can start the
self same appliations from the command line.

I'm experiencing this too, using Ubuntu 13.10 on Dell E6530 laptop.
After pressing Fn+up/down, nothing happens for 1-2s, then the brightness
is changed, then the OSD for it pops up. I can only change the backlight

I'm keeping the upstream bug open to see if we can fix the performance
implications of the workaround. But as far as the corruption is
concerned, the fix has been release (and packaged by Ubuntu).

On ubuntu 12.04.4 (precise), I was able to run a *.jnlp from Firefox
(26.0+build2-0ubuntu0.12.04.2) only after manually configuring update-
alternatives to use javaws from openjdk-7:
