Any xfce app that calls xfce_dialog_show_help won't

Ok, so this proves my point. The unwanted change somewhere in the X/GL
stack is that the visual with the composite alpha channels is now
accidentally chosen by default whereas the applications expect the
alpha channel to be ignored.

I'm on a dell vostro 1320 and was sent here. The issue has appeared only
very recently on trusty, shortly after installling i8kutils and
following a guide on the ubuntu forums for using it. I now only get a
complete boot 1/10 times and get many crashes once logged in.

It looks like xfce4-session is restoring a saved session without xfwm4.
Please delete the content of ~/.cache/sessions/ and disable your custom
startup item for xfwm4. Does xfwm4 now start automatically after login?
