mariadb-client and mysql-client can NOT be installed at the same time.
As a temporary workaround I removed the mysql-client dependency on my
system. Everything seems to be working
I just did one more reinstall with the 14.04 without LVM encryption and
had the same results (thought I tested this first) and it appears to be
unrelated. I'm really at a loss as to the cause of this issue now.

I've created a diff between the failed attempts and the successful

I rather think it was because the format of the usb drive was ext3, and try
deleting all the usb drive and it worked well, even installing debian not
working, changing the usb drive was installed fat32 everything smoothly.
I use unetbootin for the usb drive!!!

I had to reboot to a different kernel. I couldn't log into my VPN with
3.15.0-031500rc2-generic.

I'm also seeing a ridiculous load cycle count increase on my thinkpad
x230 running xubuntu 14.04. I got suspicious when I could hear the faint
click in a quiet room, and it reminded me of the issue from several
years back.

I have this same problem.
Based on FransSchreuder solution, I found a temporary workaround:
I extracted the file:
libsane-genesys.so.1.0.23
To directory:
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/sane/libsane-genesys.so.1.0.23
From package:
libsane_1.0.23-0ubuntu1_amd64.deb
This avoid problems with package

@Kenan: some drives need to be set to 255 isntead of 254. This list is

14.04 and 12.04 image files you can download directly. However, 14.04 is
broken.

I am now able to succesfully import openvpn profiles. I tested 5
profiles, all imported correctly. Also confirmed openvpn can be
connected and disconnected from network-manager without issues.

The new fixed kernel seems work good on everyone's machine, but the patches are
not officially released yet.
I've written to the author to track the status of the patches, and I'll
