I've seen the lockup from kwin using 100% cpu on two different Kubuntu
14.04 machines, without needing to switch users. These machines were
ungrades from previous versions, 12.04 and 13.10.
I think its fixed by resetting the kwin configure file by:

Hi,
I a custom Ubuntu 12.04.4 I don't have it hanging but it is terribly slow to go
to the next step. I also have
APT::Periodic::Update-Package-Lists 1;
APT::Periodic::Download-Upgradeable-Packages 0;
APT::Periodic::AutocleanInterval 0;
in the 10periodic file.

I loaded 12.04 amd64 on it this morning. This appears to work correctly.
I can suspend and resume with no issues. There is no warning in the log
other than the 'duplicate interface' which does not seem to affect
anything. I have not upgraded anything, just installed xubuntu 12.04
then installed

You don't have an nvidia graphics card, so the nvidia kernel module is
not going to load and the nvidia control panel will not run. That is
expected... You're also running 3rd party (xorg-edgers?) X components.
For those reasons, this bug report is not valid.
