Done a bit more testing and it appears to be solely the presence of the
external monitor that renders the lock screen unlockable.
The simple lock screen works OK with an external monitor, it's only the
widget enabled lock screen that is affrected.

I am also having similar issues keeping my laptop suspended. When I try
to suspend my laptop, 90% of the time it re-wakes within 2 seconds,
displays some text on the screen, and sends me back to the log-in
screen. The work-around posted here does not work for me. Please help?

Nope, when running on noveau the error does not occur. However, as I noted

it appears to be some strange interaction between the touchpad and the nvidia

With the above chipset, hibernation is unuseable because after resuming,
the system sometimes freezes - after a couple minutes with a blank
screen where only the mouse pointer is visible - and has to be hard
reset.
