I think I've found the problem:

Good to know that this is not a bug of my computer.
I searched dmesg, /var/log/syslog, X-Server log but could not find any
new logentry that could give more information.
What can I do to bring more information?

after upgrate from Precise to Trusty nouveau driver no longer works with my
NVIDIA Geforce 8600M GT installed in Roverbook Nautilus NV-571 (aka MSI-GX600).
I see following errors in dmesg

I am now on 3.13.0-30-generic #54-Ubuntu SMP Mon Jun 9 22:45:01 UTC 2014
x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux (ubuntu 14.04).
I still get volumes of these messages so have to disconnect my
headphones every time. Being no expert I don't know if the patch is
expected to have been included or not.

I'm also affected by this bug.
Interestingly even parted crashes in my case; I don't know if this error is
related or not.
Currently I don't have access to any previous version so I can't test if
previous versions work ok.
