After further reading and experimentation, it seems that the ExecStart=
directive cannot be overridden because the contents of the override file
are appended to the contents of the main unit file. This results in two

After searching half a day for a solution to the black screen of death
issue, I finally ended up at this thread. I am happy to report the
problem on Lenovo T61 with Intel 965GM graphic card on a Ubuntu 14.04
LTS is fixed by following Jamie's steps listed in comment #99. It does

my Arch Linux box and got lightdm-gtk-greeter 2.0.0 and experienced the
same "white" screen. Clicking anywhere made the screen repaint.

First a parenthetical remark. According to interfaces(5) the "manual"
keyword is used exclusively in the "method" field, as in `iface eth0
inet manual`. But in your example you use it at the beginning of a line.
Perhaps you think that in that context "manual" means the opposite of
"auto" (non-auto?

So further experimentation revealed that we should be keeping the DBUS
activation environment up to date with all the initctl set-env calls.
Thus initctl set-env calls should call into
org.freedesktop.DBus.UpdateActivationEnvironment in the user session
upstart case.

No, the fix was proposed last year but never landed due to excessive
delays outside of Mir that meant it couldn't help yet. See above branch.
Might be worth revisiting and landing because if everything other than
Mir is now behaving then we need it.

@Achim: I have now removed the openafs packages from my system and re-
installed "openafs-client" (and dependencies) from the updates channel.
`klog` works again now. Hard to say exactly what went wrong in the
process but at least it is back in working condition now.
