I just tried to boot ubuntu-15.04-snappy-amd64-generic.img on a MinnowboardMax
and ran into this bug.
What makes it even harder to understand is that the disk geometry and
everything is in place. All that seems to be missing is the grubx64.efi bits.

Ok, what is weird is that your screenshot looks like icons on 100% zoom
on my laptop, but maybe it's due to the scaling. Here they look a bit
too big with a set up in zooms.

I tried also from a live session of Ubuntu 14.04.2 LTS booted from
ubuntu-14.04.2-desktop-amd64.iso
where I made the proposed repository available and installed usb-
creator-gtk from it. 'Nothing else' was changed from the content of the
iso file.
It still fails to install the bootloader and
sorry I don't have access to any machines that actually have a cd drive.
But, earlier you had said that VMs could not boot when an audio cd was
inserted. When you now say that you cannot play an audio-cd, do you
mean on the host or inside a VM? Do you have /dev/cdrom as a symbolic
link to
it still exists in 4.1.0
as far as I can tell it appeared between 3.12 and 3.13
