AFAIU /var/log/crash is not the location on which apport stores crash files, so
this seems to be a custom configured path trough kernel.core_pattern.
My opinion is that supporting specific paths is probably not a good idea,

After an update, hdmi was not working anymore (no video and no sound).
So i did the command:
sudo gedit /etc/default/grub
and changed "GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="NOMODESET"" into
"GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash radeon.audio=1""
then
sudo update-grub
it fixed the problem for me.

The error messages that I can see in the file
$HOME/.cache/upstart/telephony-service-indicator.log
seems related for another reason.

Mathieu, yes, this does effect Wily as well, which I forgot to mention.
System76 worked around this by backporting dmidecode 3.0 from Xenial and
delivering it in our PPA.
Originally I thought this would be the best approach for Trusty also,
but dmidecode 3.0 seems to have problems when used with
14.04, 15.10 and current 16.04 are all affected!!!
