Following your advice I was able to configure iec958:CARD=U7 and point it at
the correct hardware device.
The following aplay command goes to the digital output:

I received the user report and did a quick check using a fresh
installation of 14.04. I disabled updates at install because I wanted to
test before and after updating ca-certificates. I then only updated ca-
certificates which showed the problem (curl
https://einstein.phys.uwm.edu was not working).

You seem to have installed the cinnamon package on Ubuntu 13.10.
Unfortunately, that package is not available yet for 14.04. To upgrade

submit a pulseaudio verbose log ( https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PulseAudio/Log
) where you select the front mic and try to record from it?
And also, one alsa-info from where pulseaudio fails to set front mic
