Here are my /var/log/apt and /var/log/installer logs.
Since I am not used to this kind of work it took some time to retrieve
them. Perhaps someone could have guided me.
Some further experiment show that nomodeset in grub makes Kubuntu boot
to the screen where you choose to "Try Kubuntu" or "Insta
I've confirmed that the innodb_additional_mem_pool_size line is
commented out, but I still get the same error after restarting. I have
done sudo apt-get dist-upgrade as well as sudo apt-get update, so
everything is literally up to the minute. I am not sure what else to try
at this point.

How can this take so much time? The problem is very simple: you have
included grub settings that grub does not support anymore. All you need
to do is to update the template for grub settings to include only
supported settings. No more than that.
