Similar problems, I have observed in Ubuntu 14.04, after upgrade to kernel
3.16, unchanged version of pulseaudio. Perhaps it is connected with a timer, or
other changes in the kernel, and possibly in snd_usb_audio driver.

my.cnf has the removed options from 5.5, which I guess is what breaks
