14.04 server to 16.04 using do-release-upgrade. My static IP configured
in /etc/network/interfaces was configured to come up on eth0. Logging in

The issue was caused by gdk-pixbuf being unable to recognize the file
format of the theme image files (or of any image file).
This seems to have been caused by the creation of a
/usr/local/share/applications directory and files in it with incorrect
permissions by the Makefile of Anki 2.0.41
Please find enc a patch that resolves this bug.
AndyRock via IRC #ubuntu-devel 10/02/17 suggested this fix. I have
slightly altered this so that the the remove ptr line is within the
weak-ptr if clause otherwise the weak-ptr function would crash where the
ptr does not actually exist.

Looks like build 3.15.0-0.1 still has the issue. It also would not boot
correctly... landed the server at a busybox type interface.

I have experienced this problem trying to start lxde using the TightVNC
vncserver from systemd.
The process with the displayed PID is always lxsession.
I resolved it by adding PAMName=login to my unit file.

Clarification: I split my changes into two patches. They both still work
on the latest release.
My patches simply restore code that was removed a while back, so it's
pretty safe to consider them already-tested. They don't change the
default behavior, so applying them shouldn't affect current
tests ran: 10, failed: 0;

After I submitted this report, I upgraded to kernel 4.6 to see if that
helped. It did not, but when I upgraded to Ubuntu 16.10, the bug
resolved itself.

The solution here is to convince the package maintainers that WE NEED
THEM TO FIX THIS BUG.
My patch still works on the latest release. ALL THEY NEED TO DO IS
APPLY IT.
I occasionally update my PPA for the release that I run myself
(currently Xubuntu yakkety), but expecting me to do maintain a
