Ktnef exists in xenial and should be affected the same. As for kdepim, I
made a mistake when looking at the contents. The code is rather
different, so if the old ktnef from kdepim is affected then this is
relevant for trusty *and* xenial, not just trusty.

I'm not sure if this constitutes a fix or not, but I was able to get GTK
applications looking normal again by going into System Settings and
changing the theme to Adwaita or Ambience. I don't think there was any
theme set (or a different theme not listed)... and it wasn't easy to
select a theme

Thanks so much for your reply, I really appreciate it. I should have
been more precise in my last comment, sorry about that, but I wasn't too
sure whether anyone would be reading it ;).

the fact that earlier versions of Ubuntu didn't experience this issue,
this issue happens regardless of which router we're connecting to, it
happens regardless of which location we are at, and the underlying issue

After switching the connection of the printer in the printer properties,
from USB type to using the printer DNNS, my Canon printer is able to
print again. In the make and mode, it shows Canon MG5300 series -
CUPS+Gutenprint v5.2.11. It is puzzling how cups is not able to detect
my printer.
