release process occupied the whole disk, causing 99+% iowait in top and
100+MiB/s disk read in iotop (normal HDD, not SSD), which almost freeze

For some reason I had a similar problem but when I switched my
antialiasing from grayscale to rgba (through unity-tweak-tool) it was
fixed. Downside is I have a low-res monitor so text looks slightly
colored.

this software better. This particular crash has already been reported
and is a duplicate of bug #1617564, so is being marked as such.
Had the same problem, https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-
xorg-video-intel/+bug/1537053/comments/15 solved the problem. Is there
any permanent fix available from OS side in the new version?

Hmm, I could do a semi-permanent workaround in Xmir along the lines of:
Xmir -flattenOverrideRedirects
That might be adequate to fix this for Firefox and others. Although I
dread having to make Xmir lookup a blacklist of broken apps and apply
workarounds on the fly. It would be better in the
