Well, it did not fail, it re-used the existing information. Transient
network errors do not cause the update to fail, because they are
expected to be temporary. It's always been like this. I'm open to
possibly changing this, but such a change could cause huge issues.

That being said, I believe your problem is not samba related
The fix is difficult to test directly, but David verified a test version
of linux-firmware in comment #2. I've compared the contents of that
package to the 1.157.11 in -proposed and found that aside from the
version they are identical, so this should be sufficient to verify the
-proposed package.
