card (rx580, or so I was told on IRC), but I have installed locally
drivers which are loaded automatically on Xorg session (Drivers are from
http://ppa.launchpad.net/oibaf/graphics-drivers/ubuntu). My question is

Thanks Jesse for the further information you provided. It looks like
it's problem solved for you.
Ads2 (and anyone else that has a similar problem): although the
symptom is the same (the dock showing on the lock screen), the root
cause can be due to a myriad of problems. The reason is that the
I believe the issue was due to the Polari IRC application. It ultimately
froze, while playing the *bell* sound on loop. After restarting the
laptop it works fine again, but the application my have issues running
for days at time.

previous post, and yes, I tried the ugly workaround as soon as Hans
Schwimmbeck posted it, and it used to work, but it prevents from
updating too many packages due to a daisy chain of dependencies; I do
not even know if I could reinst
ulimit is settable system wide, so, at the end of /etc/security/limits.conf
add the lines:

then reboot the system. That will set system wide limits for all tasks.

It was caused by the problem in mate-panel, as described in bug 1675888. It's
fixed in Artful now.
