Final update on this. It turned out that using the 2.4 Ghz band was much
more stable than 5 Ghz, which got wedged within minutes, but conditions
eventually worsened until even on 2.4 Ghz without much internet usage it
would get wedged every few hours. I then tried out various kernel

I used a blank drive and installed 17.10 I then did all updates with no
other PPAs enabled besides the default Kubuntu ones. The driver
manager did ask if I wanted to use a propitiatory Nvidia driver and I
said yes and let it install the default Nvidia driver. I installed
nothing else. I
I added the device ID to the kernel, so need to verify if this work out
of the box.

can record any blank DL DVD with no problem. xorriso can record DL DVD
on either drive.
So, the problem seems isolated to growisofs and some alignment
peculiarity with the firmware of this DS8A1H drive.

Whenever I sleep the computer, upon waking/opening the lid, it reboots.
I tried Xorg instead of Wayland, gdm3 instead of lightdm, adding
