Same problem here on an Alienware 15 r3 with this kernel. The boot seems
to go till the end but the x server never starts. Can still boot using
the 4.13.0-31 kernel.

Again. I have had pretty small clean installation of mini.iso. Then I
installed `xubuntu-desktop` meta-package. I do not have other desktops
installed. This method is normal and useful. It worked normally for
years. I'm using it for `ubuntu-mate-desktop` without issues.

This is turning out to be a bit more tricky. Switching drivers in
'Software & Updates' did appear to work, but nvidia module was still
reporting in the logs. I purged nvidia, then the system wouldn't boot.
I tried a few of the boot params; but eventually the only way I was able
to get the system
I have been running with that in my GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX for a couple days
now. It's unclear whether it is having an impact. Crash rate does not
seem to be reduced, and I am often unable to see the logs after it
hangs.

I stopped using Eclipse on Ubuntu for now, but I'm just facing the same problem
again, now with Emacs 25.2.1. It appeared when I maximised the window and then
tried to reduce it.
gnome-shell CPU load reached 95% and after a while decreased down to 70%, but
it's not stable, sometime incr
