I've added another user and no difference. Can easily toggle between

When I enter my credentials into the login screen, it shows black screen
(as if processing something in the background) and then after a minute
or so it goes back to the login screen and I have to enter my
credentials again. This happen sometimes but not all the time.
Your best chance is to boot Ubuntu from USB so that the broken harddisk
is not used. Then you will have a chance to try and access the files on
the broken harddisk using the Files app in your live USB session.
