Fairly simple install on non-efi Dell Latitude E6400. Just selected
"something else" and used an existing partition for /. Another OS is
already installed next to it (on sda3 I think).
Installation ended with a grub install warning. Not sure what will
happen when I reboot
I don't think it does. If you manage to repro again please either core
dump or install the symbols before back tracing. But I'm afraid it's a
shot in the dark until we know more or can repro.

Note that this only changes the behavior on SECOND boot of the image.
If you have systems that wouldn't boot the previous image at all, this

PPA that provides Xorg packages. This will prevent the upgrade as that
PPA contains package version numbers greater than the release
