Ok I found in the stdc++ implementation of "new" that sz indeed is passed to
malloc.
void *ptr = std::malloc(sz))
Thereby it indeed means "bytes" and that means ~18 exabyte which is slightly
more than most systems can offer :-)
The question now becomes, where is this value created/derived
The error came from time to time - say every 10th start.
I have not noticed it for long, but maybe it is still there.

to hirsute including a sanity-test autopkgtest - could you take a look
if that is good enough? One note: currently the test is failing on armhf
(but not blocking, as this was the first time it ran). The reason for

Ardour crashes when parameter "Oversampling" has the value "4"
Because of this i was unable to open my Ardour and Mixbus files anymore.
To save the work with enabling/disabling all plugins
open the affected .ardour file

I can also confirm that xtables-addons 3.9-1ubuntu0.2~20.04.1 can be
installed and compiled with both 5.4 and 5.8 kernels in Focal:
