Yes, this is right. Both it works with hplip-3.21.2.

I have the same (or similar) problem.
To resolve the freezing of most of the gui applications, I have to repeat the
logoff-login operation, pressing the shortkey-combinations CTRL + ALT + F1, and
the problem seems to disapere.
