I found some sort of fix for it.
It seems that by default network-admin does not write auto wlan0 in
/etc/network/interfaces.
This can be fixed by editing ~/.gnome2/network-admin-locations/name of
location and changing auto=false to auto=true in the section corresponding to
the wireless
Does sudo /etc/acpi/sleep.sh force work better for you? If yes, a
workaround is to modify the hal scripts (/usr/lib/hal/scripts/hal-
system-power-suspend-linux) to call /etc/acpi/sleep.sh instead of pm-
suspend (around line 74, comment the if block and replace it).
That works for me.

Public bug reported:
I have a Dell Inspiron 1501. I can change the laptop screen's brightness
by echo-ing values such as 37 12 25 37 50 62 75 87 100 in
/proc/acpi/video/VGA/LCD/brightness. Until recently, brightness controls
worked OK through the Fn+Up/Down keys. A recent update broke this.

I read my own comment and noticed that on the first resume the device was
disconnected while the system was being suspended.
I experimented and noticed that the bug always manifests itself if the device
is plugged in at the moment the system starts to suspend, and never when the
device is
Please note that the problem does not manifest itself consistently. On some
resumes devices are detected OK, on some they are not.
I tried several suspend/resumes to reproduce the problem. Here is the dmesg
