It turns out that my problem was happening because of the presence of oem-config and ubiquity. These should have been removed at the end of installation, but they weren't. These were being started when X started, which was perhaps causing the TTY to be stolen (by bterm). In any case, maybe this

Yes, it fails with a clean profile. What happens is that anything contained within the feed is displayed, but anything that requires liferea to go and fetch something over http fails. I think what happens is that the original feed is fetched by liferea itself and then the feed item is handed over
