Ubuntu just downloaded a Poppler update today (0.8.7). I printed the
offending file on the offending printer and everything is correct.

Yes, printing to a postscript or PDF file works properly. Only observe
the problem when printing to a Brother MFC 9800 and Samsung CLP600
colour laser printer.

I've tried Acroread (Adobe), XPDF and PDFedit. All three work fine
(well, PDFedit I can export a PNG that looks fine).
Here is a scan of what I see (top is the Acroread print, bottom is
Evince). I should add that I'm using Evince through the Ubuntu Document
Viewer 2.24.1, which claims to use
