I wasn't willing to chmod 777 anything so I have lived with this bug for
about 4 years... (not my primary machine). Anyway, at some point after
upgrading to 17.04 it seems to have disappeared for me. I am currently
on version 0.9.2-3ubuntu15 of plymouth, and am not seeing the crash

problem, but in my case the bad exit status was caused by:

I switched from a USA to UK keyboard and had this problem but I think I
have solved it.
First ensure that under "System Settings > Keyboard > Layouts" that
"Separate layout for each window" is unchecked, then remove the USA
keyboard and apply system-wide.
