Pressing Fn+F5 and Fn+F6 makes the on screen indicator appear but they
don't modify the LCD's brightness
Might this be caused by the little mesh at /sys/class/backlight ?

No, the resolution was not correct, actually the TV was not even detecting
input via HDMI initially.
I had to fumble quite a bit and try many resolutions before I could get video
output on the TV.

It doesn't look like like you're using MapsGL[1] from the screen
capture.
