I have hardy with 3.5.9 installed. The exclude setting now appears to be working properly. With any small font size ( 16pt) I still see the color aberrations if subpixel hinting is enabled, but the exclude settings are able to exclude these sizes. The problem is not limited to the DejaVu font. --
