Got a suggestion from cjwatson:
Try using the debian installer's rescue mode to give a shell in the
relevant root filesystem, and run 'grub-install --debug-image=all
/dev/sda' (or whatever device is appropriate)
If we can connect a serial console to this system, we might be able to
save
I was able to reproduce this bug using gparted 0.5.1-1ubuntu2; however,
I can *not* recreate this bug using gparted 0.5.1-1ubuntu3 in lucid-
proposed. Please let me know if I need to provide any additional

200* might take a long time. This can be worked around by switching
Dynamic CPU Frequency Mode from Dynamic to Always Low in BIOS or
setting acpi=off as a kernel parameter for net boot.
