This has just happened to me, hopefully freeing up some space will do
the trick , if so I'll report back. I just wanted to resuggest the idea
of a warning about running out of space before it happens.

I had this same problem with my KPC680 card. I am using a slightly
newer version of NetworkManager with 8.10. I was able to resolve the
problem by modifying the /etc/ppp/options file. The following lines
should be changed to 0:
lcp-echo-interval 0
lcp-echo-failure 0

I applied the fix included in the patch above, and the problem was
solved. I was able to mount my SATA drive with no problems.

as of yesterday 2007-02-17. I upgraded from Edgy by changing all my
repos from Edgy to Feisty and using apt-get dist-upgrade.

I have the same problem. My printer is an HP PSC 1610xi that worked
fine in Edgy, but now isn't detected in Feisty. It is connected via
USB, and isn't recognized by the system at all. lsusb shows no printer
connected.

Upon startup, my Seagate SATA 80GB harddrive is not detected. I get:
