I was able to work around this with Edit -> Preferences -> Devices and
choosing actual hardware devices for both Recording and Playback. I had
to experiment with which devices to choose, but was able to find a
combination that avoided the problem.

The package depends on "java" but actually, FreeGuide doesn't work with
the gcj version of java - it requires openjdk-6-jre or sun-java6-jre.
I don't know whether there's a good way to specify something like that

As described in bug #218434, I can work around this by running this
comand:

When I choose the Gutsy kernel that was left by the upgrade, I get the

Interestingly, the gnome-keyring-daemon segfault does not seem to happen
I have a machine with hardware raid which appears to be showing the same
behaviour. I have managed to create a partial workaround by killing a
dbus-daemon process, so I have logged a bug against dbus in case that is
where the real problem lies. It's bug #229637.

Last night I changed the BIOS setting for the parallel port to bi-
directional mode.
Now I can see an lp0 device, and system-config-printer offers me an
LPT1: printer when I click "New Printer".
But, when I print something (either a test page or echo something to

I can confirm that typing:
