Picked up the 2.6.32-24 kernel when updating today - system continues to
run without freezes as long as irqbalance disabled, as I reported back
in June.
However I then re-enabled irqbalance as an experiment, straight back to
the immediate freezes at logon time as in the bug description. Disabled

expired as the bug as it effected me is being tracked as 528720
irqbalance where it still persists even with the latest kernel.

I reported the same set of symptoms on Ubuntu 10.04 with bug 586471.
Uninstalling irqbalance 0.55+20091017-3ubuntu2 in Synaptic allows me to
get past logging on and use the system normally. Thank you.
As I am new to Linux, I could not immediately see how to edit
/etc/default/irqbalance which is
Removing irqbalance as described in bug 528720 seems to have got rid of
my logon freeze problems.
I can now boot Ubuntu without adding any boot parameters, and then logon
without getting any freezes.
Have rebooted several times and used it for a few hours without any recurrence
yet.

I noticed the following agpart lines in the kernel log.
The 16x mode is odd as the mobo only supports up to 8x and the bios
correctly only offers up to 4x as that is the maximum for this old
graphics card I think.

Ok, provoked a logon freeze by not adding any parameters at boot, then
rebooted with noapic to run the apport above.
On this freeze I was able to key in most of the characters in my
password before the keyboard and mouse froze, it did not do the "stuck
key" thing.

Would others with this problem say what sort of video cards they are
using, where the noapic option seems to prevent the almost instant
keyboard/mouse freeze?
Mine is a Nvidia GeForce 256 SDR which is referred to as NV10, and it is
far older than the mobo.

If you needed noapic to install time like me, then you need it again to
run.
When the boot choice screen comes up, there is an explanation at the
bottom, I think you just have to hit the e key and then you can edit the
boot options. Easier just to try it than for me to explain.
