Workaround:
Alt-F6 to switch to a text terminal
login there
sudo pkill -9 gnome-screensav
F7 to switch back to GUI
The screen is unlocked.
Note, even
pkill -9 gnome-screensav
should be enough I think (wihtou sudo), because I saw gnome-screensav is
run from the same non-root us

My Ubuntu 14.0.4 LTS got several software updates during the last days.
Today I have rebooted my computer. After I login, the screen only has
the purple ubuntu background, but no Unity panels/toolbars. Tried to
reboot several times - doesn't help.

After I installed NVIDIA video driver the crashes do not occur anymore.
Therefore I think the crashes were caused by Nouveau open source video
driver coming with Ubuntu by default.

Today observed crashes when no virtual machines were running, so
probably VirtualBox is not the cause.
