I still get the panic on AC power and do not use evolution (though I
suppose it is installed by default, and may be running via hooks into
gnome such as the calendar). Currently using the most up-to-date

Confirmed for ubuntu-10-04/lucid lynx - thunar shows my new icon for Excel and
Powerpoint but not for Word.
Nautilus and the GNOME Desktop do not show the freshly associated types.
I had to run assogiate with sudo make changes visible for thunar.

Just dropping in to say that I, too, experience this problem. I guess I
should try 2.6.24-19 (as a temporary fix).
In initramfs, if I type "exit", the system continues to boot normally
