Yes, the backlight has never worked on my S3 Savage since about Hoary
Hedgehog :(
I have tried everything and have to write fancy scripts that call
vbetool, which is not user-friendly or conveient... and it only
works then if I close the laptop lid anyway,...

I am also having problems with the compose key. Unlike others here, I
can't type accented characters no matter whether I press the accent

xorg.conf file, and I copied my config from my old Hardy

the sound chip after it stops working, and meanwhile hope that perhaps
somehow PulseAudio might alleviate the problem to some degree - though I

Thanks _oOMOo_ - I had noticed that with the various updates to Hardy,
the disk device was swapping between sda hda, and for that reason
added stanzas for both disk in /etc/hdparm.conf.

I tried using the native kernel module (rt61pci) again last night
instead of NDISwrapper and I found that the signal strength was about
1/3 to 1/4 of what I get with NDISwrapper, and that it was generally
unreliable. I've heard other reports of low signal strength too.

replacement for the native rt61 driver. It simply 'wraps' the Windows
XP/2000 driver in a partial Windows emulation layer, and I've been using
it for several months and never lose connection or have to restart the

I have a similar bug in Gutsy - Epiphany does not honour the Gconf
/system/http_proxy/ settings. I have tried setting them via gnome-
network-preferences and also via /etc/gconf/gconf.xml.mandatory schema.
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ gconftool -R /system/http_proxy
use_http_proxy = true
mode = manual
I managed to resolve this soon after my last comment - it appears that
all of the above settings must be created under the /system/proxy/ key.
As soon as I'd done that it started working.

Still not fixed for me. When Xscreensaver tries to 'standby' after 10
minutes my screen backlight does not turn off - although I see an
interesting pattern which kinda looks like a grid of transistors in
bright white against the black background, so I suspect it is trying to
turn off.

After compiling and installing 'vanilla' kernel 2.6.23.1, my machine
runs at full speed again and also suspend to disk RAM both work. I

My laptop has a Pentium III 600 (Coppermine) CPU, and none of the
various CPU frequency/scaling kernel modules are loadable. This means
that the subdirectories under /sys for controlling throttling etc are
non-existent.
With ACPI enabled, the kernel seems to run slowly right from the start.

server is *always* a DNS caching server (i.e. that it will accept DNS
queries on 53/UDP 53/TCP, look up the results and return the resolved

Unfortunately the latest Edgy updates as at today have not not fixed
this for me. I'm running a Toshiba notebook with S3 Savage.
Running 'xset dpms force off' makes the screen go black but the
