Public bug reported:
Running dual-boot with Windows8. When I rebooted into Ubuntu, sound
didn't work at all. Reboot might fix the problem but I'd like to know
how to troubleshoot without rebooting.
Seems like a sound driver issue and I have some very important tiger
maulings to watch on youtube.

Hello, KTomek.
I did exactly what you said, but ossmixer says no mixers are
available. In my opinion this problem is related to this bug

mixer: Can't open device /dev/mixer, mixer volume and mute unavailable
Your workaround is working for mine too after restarting system. As you
mentioned in #4 it has two drawbacks first volume applet is not useful,
second we can't control volume with in tvtime but mute works.

mixer: Can't open device /dev/mixer, mixer volume and mute unavailable
Update:- Audio don't work in gstreamer and similarly I can't listen to
login and logout sound. In vlc I have to made oss mixer default device

package initramfs-tools 0.98.1ubuntu6 [modified: usr/sbin/update-initramfs]
failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed
I am having the same problem and for the time being I solved it by
inserting audio system's cable in audio port of tv-tuner, instead in
motherboard's port. This means that I can't listen to operating system
but can listen to tv tuner.Mute(by pressing m) works in tv time when I
do this, although
This problem exists in final release too. This is very annoying to see
that all devices using Line-IN are not working in 10.10, while they
worked well in 10.04.Compilation of kernel with a patch is not a task a
average user can do.
