Oops. I replied to Pedro via email instead of posting it here. This
was with a large map. I've no idea about the compiz question.
At any rate, I was able to solve the problem. Open gconf-editor, click
on gnomine. In the right panel, you'll see a checkbox for
fullscreen. I unchecked it and

After upgrading my system from Gutsy to Hardy (8.04), the Mines game
is stuck in full-screen mode. Choosing Settings-Leave fullscreen or
hitting F11 just makes the screen flash and return to fullscreen mode.
