Same problem here. I can get it to launch without crashing or hogging the memory by changing the QT theme to Motif (damn ugly) OR by running LIBOVERLAY_SCROLLBAR=0 picard, which I thought was the perfect solution until I resized the window and it crashed and started sucking the memory again. QT problem? Happens with puddletag as well.
