I had this problem as well with an ATI card. It was solved by changing
the output mode to no Xv. What does this do?

I eventually just used Xubuntu as its more appropriate for the computer
anyway. If there's a bug, its probably not worth worrying about since
this computer is almost 10 years old. Thanks.
