The broken launcher menu doesn't have that much to do with it. I killed
kded4 and restarted it, yielding a fully functional menu (and a broken
brightness control) again. The sleep command however still doesn't lock
the screen as it should do. Which additional information do you need?

Maybe kded4 has something to do with it. As described in bug #1007464,
brightness control was working as it should, but other things were
wrong. After killall kded4 and restarting it, some of these things were
fixed BUT brightness control via hardware keys is now broken again.

I also had a run on a different machine with Oneiric + 3.0.0-17-generic
kernel, which was also capped at ~70 MB/s read and 15 MB/s write.
btw, any idea how to gain constant write rates? Using Windows, 40 MB/s

Noticed this happens far more often when VMWare Workstation (or Player)
is running. No need to have it maximized or fullscreen, even running in

picture: gedit without any readable character. kate and kwrite were

later, I couldn't open other windows, some X error occured. I was not
able to preserve that as X completely crashed that moment.
kwrite had no problems as firefox did, however, access to the file
system was very very slow.
