I can confirm that Fedora 16 since the 3.3 kernels also affect this bug. I
switched to Fedora because it seemed to be uneffected. I am working on a Lenovo
X220.
Is there a way to downgrade only the kernel in Ubuntu as workaround?

I can confirm this problem, I also have an Nvidia (5700 GO) and when enabling
the effects the window manager does not work. Compiz however works fine (the
switcher and cube do work).
When I try manually to run 'compiz --replace' and 'gtk-window-decorator
--replace', compiz also works but
Start 'compiz --replace' and 'gtk-window-decorator --replace' from two
different terminals. Then try to reproduce the crash (e.g. by right
clicking a few times on the windows bars) and attach the output in two
separated files here.

some more information, I think there are actually two bugs.
Bug 1 - the notification area plugin is not working

switch the checkbox state but does not load the plugin nor gives any output.
Bug 2 - something in
Same problem here (AMD64, 2.6.19-6-generic and 2.6.19-5-generic kernel), It
does load some parts of the kernel but it never reaches the point of mounting
the root disk (XFS partition). nosplash and recovery also won't boot.
I did a upgrade from a fresh edgy and my 2.6.17-10-generic boots fine.

in my menu.lst is no enabled kopt_2_6 line and update-initramfs -u
only updates the initramfs of 2.6.19-5-generic. Booting 2.6.19-5-generic
now gives a new result and ends up in busybox while 2.6.19-6-generic
still refuses to continue to load.
** Attachment added: menu.lst file
Deleted the line and run the update-initramfs command. Kernel still
won't boot. When trying restore mode, the kernel does load, last part it
loads is the usb core. It does reacts on events like adding/removing USB
devices, but it does not get to the point of a shell.

roundup to fix this problem:
- remove the '# kopt_2_6=root=/dev/hdaX ro' line from your menu.lst
- $ sudo update-initramfs -u -k 2.6.19-6-generic

- reboot
