I found a number of buglets in vbrfix (which doesn't appear to have
changed from lucid through precise).
1. It appears to use a fixed intermediate tempfile name of vbrfix.tmp
in its processing of any file. Presumably Bad Things will happen if two
copies are run
Confirmed: the latest Linus-tagged release (2.6.38-rc2) also does not
crash when I run this test.

LSI's support engineer indicated the OOPS (included in the syslog
snippet attached previously) did indeed indicate a kernel bug. For what
it's worth, installing 2.6.36.3-natty from the Ubuntu mainline kernels
PPA appears to have cured the hang.

I used to be affected quite badly by this problem, through all of
Intrepid and into Jaunty. My system's no longer affected.
What eventually appeared to resolve the problem for me was a combination
of newer kernels (somewhere in Jaunty's updates, sorry I don't have a
version to reference) and a
Public bug reported:
Binary package hint: lame
Lame 3.97 from jaunty supported reading FLAC files. Trying the same
command with Karmic's 3.98.2 results in `Warning: unsupported audio
format`.
e.g. `lame foo.flac foo.mp3` no longer works.

This just started happening to me in Ubuntu jaunty; when bringing up a dialog
in various Gnome apps, there is a twenty-five second delay before it appears,
during which time the app appears to be frozen. I'm not sure if it affects
every application, but I see it in various situations:

I started seeing this behaviour when I upgraded from Ubuntu intrepid to
jaunty. I print via IPP to another Ubuntu machine, which has an HP
LaserJet 4050PS connected to it via ethernet.
The behaviour is exactly as described above: the descenders of letters
seem to rotate slightly out of the
