I had the same problem under chromium only, with hdmi output in flash and html5
videos (it would work fine in FIrefox).
Saki's solution fixed it for me as well ! Thank you :)

This just happened to me, too. I used to be able to swith from ubuntu
drivers to proprietary drivers (i've been testing battery life)... but
today when i tried to switch to proprietary drivers, after clicking
apply changes, the window went blank and now it says no proprietary
drivers available,
This bug affects me too. Soundcountrol (fn + 3, fn +4) and brightness
(fn + F6, fn + F7) used to work on 11.10 (i'm using Ubuntu Voyager), but
