However while trying other distros (in a Unity avoidance strategy) I
noticed the the version 3.x.x linux kernel that ships with Ubunto 11.10
does not have this problem but Mint 11 based on an earlier kernel does.

It appear the file gets changed back even in that case. I am not certain
whether its a daemon or if it happens when you try to print. I THINK its
a daemon. I'll test it further and report back - tomorrow.
