I have a Lenovo S540 with a Radeon HD8670M and installed Ubuntu 14.04, after
reading this bug I was convinced I had the same problem.
Booting with nomodeset in the boot options enabled unity to load with all
kernels.
I installed kernel 3.14.1-031401-generic _and_ fglrx and now I'm able to boot
My Archos 9 also has a Poulsbo chipset so only vesa graphics in Lucid.

Latest Jaunty updates have fixed performance problems for me.. Memory
usage is also back to normal, a bit higher but maybe that's normal...

Forget to report this... If you enable UXA in xorg.conf the performance
of desktop effects is quite good. The downside is that compiz.real
consumes a lot of memory. It starts normal but after a couple of hours

the Jaunty beta and applied all updates which came through the update-
manager but still very slow desktop effects... Do you think the patched
kernel will help on my system?

Changing file permissions on /dev/dri/card0 (suggested here:

improved FPS a bit...

is loaded fine but that GDM crashes. I found the following erros in

That are the files you requested.
I've installed the last updates including a kernel update and without the
modules from Intel's git repository I have no 3D at all, that's the first
xsession-errors file..
After compiling and installing the git driver, 3D is working fine and the
