If we have to stop using the system tray icon, what does Canonical
suggest we should use?

I can only think of splitting the application into two parts. A service
and a UI with the UI managing the service.

This might be big changes and add up on the cost to the company. It also
makes supporting multiple OS much more complicated than it needs to be.

In my opinion it we'll need to do a redesign and do a complete rewrite
of the application to do a good job of it.
